The wild elephant was found dead yesterday (26) afternoon in the jungle area of Nanneriya, Nahettikulama, after a fierce battle that lasted for over three days between a tusker and a wild elephant. Wildlife officials and the police jointly discovered the body after the wild elephant was severely attacked in the conflict between the two animals.
Villagers who witnessed the two animals attacking each other in the jungle immediately informed the wildlife authorities. Subsequently, villagers and wildlife officials jointly attempted to drive the two animals back into the jungle on several occasions, but the police state that they returned and attacked each other again. After receiving information that the wild elephant was dead, a police team including Nanneriya Police Station OIC Chief Inspector Deepal Wijesinghe and officials from the Galgamuwa Wildlife Office visited the site and conducted investigations.
The police state that nearly ten severe injuries were found on the body of the wild elephant that died after being attacked by the tusker. Villagers have informed police officers that this wild elephant, which has now died, had been roaming in Nanneriya Paha and surrounding areas for a long time, and had attacked and killed about eight people on various occasions. Additionally, villagers say that the same wild elephant had extensively destroyed many houses and cultivated lands in the area.
Officials from the Galgamuwa Wildlife Office have now taken steps to report the facts regarding this incident to the Galgamuwa Magistrate's Court. Wildlife authorities are also organizing the necessary arrangements to conduct the post-mortem examination of the deceased wild elephant.
