A major disaster that was about to occur when a motorcycle collided with a parked container truck in the Polgasowita, Waththara area on the Horana-Colombo main road has been averted due to the quick and intelligent actions of the truck driver. According to the Kahathuduwa Police, the motorcycle caught fire with the accident, and the driver's strategic driving to separate the burning motorcycle from the truck prevented the destruction of a stock of rubber worth billions of rupees and surrounding properties.
At the time of the accident, the container truck driver was transporting a stock of rubber sheets and had stopped the vehicle near a hotel in the Waththara area for a tea break. At that moment, a motorcycle approaching from Piliyandala collided with the rear of the container truck, and due to the impact, the motorcycle became lodged in the truck and caught fire. The motorcyclist, who sustained burn injuries from the fire, was immediately admitted to the Waththara Divisional Hospital by local residents.
Immediately after the accident, bystanders tried to rescue the injured person, but they were unable to remove the motorcycle as it was firmly lodged in the truck. At that moment, the driver, who was inside the hotel, saw the incident and immediately acted, starting his container truck and driving it forward with the motorcycle engulfed in flames still attached. Then, by suddenly swerving the truck to hit the motorcycle against the median strip (middle island) on the right side of the road, the lodged motorcycle detached from the container truck and fell onto the road.
Eyewitnesses state that if the driver had not taken this decisive step, not only would the stock of rubber sheets worth millions of rupees in the container truck have been destroyed, but also several shops located near the road could have caught fire and been destroyed. The Kahathuduwa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
