8 officers suspended for kidnapping millionaires and extorting money while on police duty

Steps have been taken to suspend eight police officers suspected of being involved in the incident where a millionaire businessman was abducted while dressed in police uniform, and gold items worth over 100 million rupees were robbed. Police Media Spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Attorney-at-Law Udaya Kumara Wuttler confirmed that the services of these officers, who are currently in remand prison, would be suspended.




Among those whose services are suspended are officers who served at various police stations. This includes a Police Inspector from Settikulam Police, two Sub-Inspectors from Kadugannawa and Wellawali Police Stations, and a Sergeant who served at Kobeygane Police. Additionally, four Police Constables who were attached to Sevanagala, Grandpass, Telikada, and Badulla Police Stations are also slated for suspension.

This crime took place on March 18, 2023. During that period, these officers, who were on duty at the Colombo North Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau, had abducted a millionaire businessman named Mohammed Rauf Mohammed Muad Ahmed. Subsequently, they are accused of threatening to kill him, instilling fear of death, and robbing a stock of gold weighing over two kilograms that was in his possession.




A lengthy investigation into this large-scale robbery has been conducted by a special unit of the Criminal Investigation Department. Based on the facts revealed during the investigation, and acting on the instructions of the Attorney General, steps were taken to arrest the relevant suspected police officers, who are currently in prison.
