An unusual and extremely severe storm condition that affected India's Uttar Pradesh state has claimed the lives of approximately 111 people across 26 districts, with another 72 people sustaining injuries.

This adverse weather condition included hurricane-like gales blowing at speeds of 100 to 130 kilometers per hour, heavy rainfall, lightning strikes, dust storms, and hailstorms. Due to this violent weather, massive trees were uprooted, walls and temporary roofs collapsed, and electricity poles fell, completely disrupting the state's power supply and transportation, leading to extensive property damage.

According to the latest reports, approximately 227 houses built with mud and weak materials have been severely damaged, and about 170 animals have lost their lives. From Prayagraj district, which was most severely affected by this disaster, 21 deaths have been reported. Bhadohi district reported 16 to 17 deaths, Sant Ravidas Nagar reported 14 deaths, and Fatehpur reported between 9 and 11 deaths. Additionally, the districts of Mirzapur, Budaun, Sonbhadra, Barabanki, Bahraich, Hardoi, Unnao, Basti, Sambhal, and Kanpur Dehat were also severely impacted by the storm.

Most deaths were caused by collapsing buildings and walls, lightning strikes, falling trees, and being hit by debris carried by the wind. Locals report that the sky suddenly turned completely black before the storm hit. Demonstrating the wind's intensity, a 50-year-old e-rickshaw driver in Bareilly was reportedly thrown about 50 feet into the air and miraculously survived with fractures. While pre-monsoon storms in mid-May are common, the unusual ferocity of this destructive storm is suspected to have been exacerbated by climate change.

Following this tragedy, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately ordered a full survey of the damage and compensation of four lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. Steps have been taken to swiftly dispatch ministers to the affected areas, and instructions have been given to complete the distribution of relief within 24 hours. The state's Relief Commissioner's office is coordinating these disaster response efforts, and Russian President Vladimir Putin has also expressed his profound sorrow over this massive devastation.
