A police constable attached to the Western Province North Divisional Criminals Division, who is accused of operating a large-scale drug network in collaboration with 'Konda Ranji', a notorious drug trafficker hiding abroad, has now fled Sri Lanka. Police investigations have confirmed that this constable has been involved in this drug trafficking for some time, posing as an officer who had gained the strong trust of a high-ranking police officer in the said division.
Information has been received that the said constable transported drugs belonging to Konda Ranji, and additionally, even drug consignments taken into police custody were resold to Konda Ranji. During an operation carried out in the Ganemulla area on or around January 29th, a team including this constable arrested a consignment of over four kilograms of cocaine, and it has been revealed that a portion of it was also sold to Konda Ranji in this manner.
The actions of this corrupt police officer were exposed through a special raid conducted by another team of officers from the Western Province North Divisional Criminals Division on the 8th of last month. During this raid, the police succeeded in arresting a 40-year-old resident of Ganemulla along with 9 kilograms and 946 grams of heroin and 12 kilograms and 300 grams of 'Ice' drug, belonging to Konda Ranji, valued at approximately 300 million rupees, hidden in a house in the Ganemulla area.
The suspect, who was interrogated by the police, stated that he had gone to the Ja-Ela area on the instructions of Konda Ranji from Dubai and obtained a parcel of cocaine from a person who arrived in a red car. He also revealed that Konda Ranji had informed him to go and collect the drug parcel without any fear, as the person arriving in that car was a police officer. Accordingly, the police, after examining CCTV footage, identified the license plate of the red car and confirmed that the suspect police constable himself had rented it from a vehicle rental service in the Sapugaskanda area, following which this officer fled the country.
As a result of expanded investigations related to this series of incidents, the Western Province North Divisional Criminals Division conducted two more raids on the 19th, centered in the Kottawa and Homagama areas. During these raids, two suspects aged 31 and 42, residents of Pannipitiya and Homagama areas, along with 2 kilograms and 400 grams of 'Ice' drug, 112 grams of heroin, and 8 grams of cocaine, and a car they used, were taken into police custody.
