Student dies 10 days after school fight

A fifteen-year-old school student, who was hospitalized with serious injuries following a recent clash between two students at Udamattala Kanitu Vidyalaya, has succumbed to his injuries ten days later. The student who tragically passed away was H.M., a resident of the Mah Aluthgamara Wewiura area in Suriyawewa, Ranmuduwewa.

The student has been identified by Mattala Police as Nimsara Denuwan.




According to information revealed through police investigations, the incident that led to this tragedy occurred on the afternoon of the 23rd within the school premises. A verbal altercation between the deceased student and another fourteen-year-old student escalated into a severe physical assault. Student Nimsara, who was seriously injured in the assault, was immediately admitted to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle, where he passed away on the night of the first while receiving treatment.

In connection with this incident, the fourteen-year-old school student accused of the assault was arrested by the police on the day of the incident and produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate's Court. The court ordered the release of the suspect minor student on a personal bail of five hundred thousand rupees, placing him under the full supervision of probation officers and in the custody of his father.




However, with the demise of the assaulted student, the police state that this legal process is expected to change further. Accordingly, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Mattala Police is currently making the necessary arrangements to submit a new report to the court regarding the student's death and to re-arrest the suspect student, who is currently out on bail, and produce him before the Tissamaharama Court. The post-mortem examination of the deceased student Nimsara Denuwan was scheduled to be held yesterday at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle.
