A special investigation has now been launched to determine whether a cake received for the birthday of a key female suspect, who is currently being detained and questioned in connection with the shooting death of Sanjeewa of Ganemulla inside the Colombo Magistrate's Court's defendant's dock, contains poison or drugs. The Colombo Central Criminal Investigation Division has reported these facts to Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dassanayake.
The cake in question was received by Pimpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi, who has been named as the 15th suspect in the relevant murder case. Her birthday was on the 29th of last month, and this cake was sent to the Colombo Crimes Division for that occasion. The Criminal Investigation Division also submitted a detailed report to the court regarding its acceptance and taking it into police custody for investigative purposes.
As strong suspicions have arisen regarding whether the cake contains any poisonous chemical substances or drugs, the police informed the court that a scientific examination of it was necessary. Accordingly, the Additional Magistrate granted permission to the police to send the cake to the Government Analyst and obtain a formal report on it.
This suspect is currently being detained and questioned for a period of 180 days, and the Colombo Crimes Division had obtained court orders for her detention for another 90 days after the initial 90-day period. The Chief Magistrate of Colombo had recently ordered that the investigations against her be expedited and that she be produced before the court, and the Additional Magistrate further ordered the police to promptly report the progress of the investigations into the cake to the court.
