Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has officially submitted a detailed affidavit regarding his assets and liabilities to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption today (10th). The Commission had given him a fourteen-day period to provide the relevant statement clarifying his assets, expenses, and sources of income, and steps have been taken to submit those reports to the Commission in this manner, as that period was due to end today.
Notifying in writing on the 23rd of last month, the Bribery Commission had emphasized to the former President that this affidavit must be submitted within the stipulated fourteen days. The Commission had also previously issued a warning that the period would not be extended further for any reason, and if he failed to submit it before the due date, strict legal action would be taken under the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Act. This call for assets has been made in relation to a special investigation initiated by the Commission regarding his financial status in the year 2015, and it is also reported that he had failed to provide the relevant information properly on previous occasions.
In a context where authorities are currently paying close attention to certain financial transactions alleged to have occurred during his tenure, a comprehensive explanation is expected through this affidavit regarding his current assets and how the relevant income was earned. This incident has become a subject of intense discussion in the political sphere as another significant milestone in the new investigation program implemented by the government with the aim of investigating the assets and liabilities of leading politicians in this country.
