A special meeting was held this afternoon (28) at the Presidential Secretariat between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Maha Sangha of the three Nikayas to discuss the incident where a group of Buddhist monks were arrested with drugs at Katunayake Airport and the situation that has arisen in connection with it. Special attention was paid to the ongoing investigations into the incident, as well as the discourse created in society thereafter.
Joining this occasion, the President pointed out that the drug menace has now become a national catastrophe affecting the entire country. Therefore, he emphasized that strong contribution and cooperation from everyone is essential for the program implemented by the government to curb this crisis. Furthermore, the President further stated that while directing the country's economy and social system towards a new direction, protecting the Sambuddha Sasana (Buddhist dispensation) and the high values associated with it is a primary objective of the current government.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) provided an explanation to the Maha Sangha regarding the arrest incident. Responding to this, the Mahanayaka Theros stated that a statement has already been issued regarding this issue, and that it should be considered the common opinion of the entire Sangha community. Furthermore, they pointed out that as ensuring the dignity and protection of the Sangha community cannot be done solely by the monks themselves, government intervention and support are absolutely essential for this.
Future measures to be taken for the protection of the Sambuddha Sasana, as well as timely amendments to be made to relevant laws and regulations, including the Vihara and Devalagam Act, were extensively discussed at this meeting. For this special discussion, the Mahanayaka and Anunayaka Theros of the three Nikayas, government cabinet ministers, the Attorney General, the Inspector General of Police, as well as a group of senior officials representing the security forces, were present.
