No one would have imagined that a happy dinner party would turn into a deathbed claiming an entire family within a few hours. This unfortunate fate, which befell a family of four, including two children, living in the Pydhonie area of Mumbai, has deeply shocked the entire region.
40-year-old Abdullah Dokadia, who ran a mobile phone accessories shop in Andheri, his 35-year-old wife Nasreen, and their beloved daughters, 16-year-old Ayesha and 13-year-old Zainab, have all lost their lives. Their home on the second floor of the 'Mughal' building on J.J. Road in Pydhonie stands empty today, leaving tears for their neighbors and the entire society.
Last Saturday night, April 25, Abdullah had organized a small family gathering at his home. Five relatives, including his brother and sister, had also participated, and they all enjoyed biryani and chicken pilaf. After dinner, the relatives left, and no one had felt any discomfort until then. However, around 1:00 AM, Abdullah, his wife, and their two daughters ate watermelon as a dessert. The tragedy began to unfold thereafter.
Around 5:00 AM, all four of them developed severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. They immediately went to Dr. Siyad Qureshi, who lived in the same building, and he advised them to be hospitalized immediately due to their serious condition. They were first admitted to Saifee Hospital, and then to Sir J.J. Hospital for further treatment. However, despite all efforts by the doctors, little Zainab passed away around 10:15 AM on Sunday morning, followed by her mother a few hours later, and Ayesha in the afternoon. The father, Abdullah, who witnessed his entire family depart before his eyes, also bid farewell to life around 10:30 PM on Sunday night.
The cause of these deaths remains a profound mystery. The J.J. Marg police have recorded this as an accidental death, and the leftover food and the partially eaten watermelon slice have been sent to the forensic laboratory in Kalina for analysis. Doctors at J.J. Hospital believe that such a rapid and tragic death cannot be caused by ordinary food poisoning. They suspect that the watermelon may have contained some chemical substance, pesticide, or a highly potent poison. Health authorities and the police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter, and Deputy Commissioner of Police Praveen Munde has stated that until the investigation reports are received, it is not possible to definitively say what truly happened.
On April 27, when the entire family was laid to rest under a single mound of earth at Marine Lines Bada Qabrastan, everyone gathered there mourned in sorrow. Abdullah's family has been silenced forever, leaving society with the serious question of how safe the fruits that come to our dining tables every day truly are.
