The Colombo District Court today (31) ordered that written submissions related to the complaint seeking an order to obtain blood samples from cricketer Chamika Karunaratne for a DNA test, in connection with a paternity case filed against him, be submitted to the court on May 13.

This petition has been filed in court by Sewwandi Senadheera, also known as Perumunelage Rasika Sewwandi, who is identified as a flight attendant and a pilot. Through her petition, she requests a declaration that Chamika Karunaratne is the father of her minor child, 'Aryan Karunaratne', who was born on September 29, 2025.

The petitioner has alleged that in or around the year 2023, the respondent Chamika Karunaratne established an intimate relationship with her and induced her into sexual relations, and that after she became pregnant, he avoided her and refused to accept paternity of the child.

When the case was called, President's Counsel Jagath Wickramanayake, appearing for the respondent party, argued that the court does not have the authority to obtain blood samples for a DNA test without a person's consent. Therefore, he requested that the application seeking his client's blood samples be rejected.

However, President's Counsel Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, presenting facts on behalf of the complainant, pointed out to the court that on a previous occasion when the case was called, a junior lawyer representing the respondent party had stated that there was no objection to a DNA test. Furthermore, since the respondent had previously agreed to a DNA test in a statement given to the Child and Women's Bureau, he requested that the laboratory where the test should be conducted be determined and the relevant order issued.

Responding to this, President's Counsel Jagath Wickramanayake clarified that his client had never consented to such a test, and that the junior lawyer in question had expressed that agreement without proper understanding.

After considering all the facts presented by both parties, the court issued this order for written submissions. Cricketer Chamika Karunaratne, the child Aryan Karunaratne, and the Registrar General, among others, have been named as respondents in this petition.

The petitioner has further requested the court to issue an order for the child and Chamika Karunaratne to undergo a DNA test to confirm the existing truth, and to issue an order to the Registrar General to amend and issue the birth certificate stating that he is the child's father.
