A close relative of former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, who was named as a key witness in the illegal money laundering case filed against him, has committed suicide by hanging himself at his home in Hiddellana, Ratnapura. The deceased had previously been arrested by the Bribery or Corruption Investigation Commission on charges of aiding and abetting the laundering of 748 million rupees allegedly illegally earned by the former minister.

He was arrested on February 3rd and, after being produced in court, was remanded for seven days, with bail being granted on February 10th. Since then, he had been suffering from severe mental stress and disappointment, and his close associates revealed that he deeply regretted being involved in a political court case, having lived a law-abiding life.

In light of this situation, it is reported that he committed suicide by hanging himself from a 'veralu' tree behind his house in the early hours of the 4th. It is suspected that he took this step due to his inability to bear the disgrace and mental distress caused by the judicial process.
