The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) states that power supply to several parts of the island was disrupted due to a technical fault in the new Anuradhapura and Vavuniya power supply.
Due to the frequency change in the national power grid caused by that technical fault, the steam turbine of the Kelanitissa Combined Cycle Power Plant became inactive and disconnected from the system.
It is reported that due to this, several areas of the island experienced power outages as the national power grid lost 55 megawatts of electricity capacity.
However, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) also states that the situation was able to be restored within a few minutes.
