A horrific incident has been reported where two police officers who attempted to stop a tractor illegally transporting sand in the Keshveli area of Kodikamam, Jaffna, were injured. In this incident, one police sergeant lost his life, and the other police constable who was on duty with him sustained serious injuries.

A senior police officer told Lankadeepa that the driver of the tractor, who drove without heeding orders, has now fled the area, and since he has been identified, a broad investigation has been launched to arrest him.

The police sergeant who faced this tragic fate is fifty-seven-year-old Hettiarachchige Albert (32881), a resident of Ranpokunagama, Nittambuwa. The other officer severely injured in the incident is Police Constable Fernando (96578), who is currently admitted to Chavakachcheri Hospital and receiving further treatment.

According to information received by the OIC regarding two tractors illegally transporting sand in the Kodikamam area, these two officers were dispatched to the relevant area. There, although one approaching tractor was signaled to stop, it attempted to continue driving without stopping. At that moment, with the aim of stopping it, one police officer used his T-56 automatic firearm and fired shots at the tractor. However, investigations have revealed that the suspect driver ruthlessly swerved the vehicle towards the police officers, ran them over, caused severe damage to the police motorcycle, and fled.

Meanwhile, the police have succeeded in locating the other tractor suspected of illegally transporting sand, hidden in a jungle area near the scene of the incident. The driver of that tractor has also been arrested on suspicion. Further investigations are currently being carried out by the Kodikamam Police to apprehend the main suspect who fled.
