The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka has approved the 13.56% electricity tariff revision requested by the Ceylon Electricity Board for the second quarter of 2026, and this new tariff increase is scheduled to come into effect from April 1st. The Public Utilities Commission officially revealed details about this new tariff revision and its impact at a special press conference held today (30).

According to this new revision, electricity bills have been increased under several categories for domestic electricity consumers. Accordingly, the electricity tariff for the consumer category using between 0 and 30 units monthly has been increased by 4.3%, which will add an increase of Rs. 15 to their monthly bill. Similarly, the tariff for the category using between 31 and 60 units of electricity has been increased by 6.9%, so they will have to pay an additional Rs. 45 on their monthly bill.

The tariff for consumers consuming between 61 and 90 units of electricity monthly has also been increased by 6.9%, which translates to a monthly increase of Rs. 120. Furthermore, the electricity bill for the consumer category from 91 to 180 units will increase by 7.2%, and their monthly bill is expected to increase by Rs. 420. However, the highest tariff increase has been imposed for domestic categories with electricity consumption exceeding 180 units, with the commission confirming this percentage as 25%.

In addition to the domestic category, the new tariff revision also applies to other sectors. The commission has taken steps not to increase tariffs for religious and charitable institutions consuming less than 180 units, but a 9.6% tariff increase has been approved for religious institutions exceeding the 180-unit limit. Concurrently, the electricity bill for the industrial sector has been increased by 8.7%, and the electricity tariff for the tourist hotel category has been increased by 9.9%. Furthermore, the Public Utilities Commission has decided to increase the tariff for the general purpose consumer category by 8% and the electricity tariff for government institutions by 14.4%.
