Information about a highly shocking crime was recently uncovered from the Gonawa area, which belongs to the Weerambugedara Police Division in the Kurunegala District of the North Western Province. This was revealed when police officers were able to recover the body of a person who was believed to have mysteriously disappeared about eleven months ago, after he had been brutally murdered and subtly buried in the garden of his own house.
The fact that the suspect carried out this murder and concealed the body in such a way that no one could find any clue about it for nearly eleven months after the crime, has become the most noteworthy aspect of this case. Due to the strong dedication and meticulous investigative skills of the officers of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Weerambugedara Police, the full details of this murder have been uncovered in this manner. The person who was murdered in this manner is Muni Arachchilage Lumbini Sandaruwan, a 42-year-old resident of the Gonawa area. He worked as an electrician by profession and lived alone in his house as an unmarried man who had never been married in his life. Further police investigations revealed that Sandaruwan's mother and father had passed away earlier, so he did not have the care of close family relatives. In addition, residents and the police have confirmed that he had been suffering severely from a certain illness for some time. The people of the area are deeply shocked by the perpetration of such an inhumane crime targeting a person in such a helpless situation.
The beginning of this unfortunate incident was marked in May of last year. Lumbini Sandaruwan suddenly disappeared from his home, and the first person to notice this was Sunil Senadheera, the son of his father's sister. Mr. Senadheera lives about 500 meters from Sandaruwan's missing house, and a strong suspicion arose in him due to not seeing his cousin for several days and finding his house locked. Accordingly, upon further investigation, Mr. Senadheera observed that Sandaruwan was not at home, and his motorcycle, which he frequently used for daily travel, was also not found at the house or anywhere nearby. Based on this suspicious situation, Mr. Sunil Senadheera officially lodged a complaint at the Weerambugedara Police Station on May 8th of last year regarding his cousin's mysterious disappearance.
Acting immediately on the complaint received, officers of the Weerambugedara Police launched a comprehensive investigation into this mysterious disappearance. Although the missing person's house and the surrounding area were thoroughly searched, the police were unable to find any significant clues in the initial few days. However, as a result of continuous meticulous investigations, police officers were able to uncover a crucial piece of information. That is, intelligence was received that a motorcycle, said to belong to the missing Lumbini Sandaruwan, was hidden in another person's house in the area. Upon inspecting the said house, the motorcycle was found and taken into police custody. In investigating who brought the motorcycle to that house, the police received the first clue about the main suspect in this murder case. The owner of the house where the motorcycle was found stated that it was brought there by someone said to be a friend of the missing person.
Following this information, the Weerambugedara Police conducted further extensive investigations and launched operations to find the person who had brought the motorcycle. He was identified as a 28-year-old individual who earned his living by plucking coconuts in the area. However, as this person had already disappeared from the area, it was a somewhat difficult task for the police to arrest him. Nevertheless, as a result of the massive investigation carried out, leaving no room for criminals to escape the law, the police revealed that this suspect had previously been arrested on suspicion of another murder. Police officers confirmed that after being produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court, he is currently remanded at the Kegalle Remand Prison.
After confirming this information, a Weerambugedara Police investigation team reported the facts to the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court and obtained an official court order to question the suspect. A team of police officers carrying this order went to the Kegalle Remand Prison and extensively questioned the 28-year-old suspect, who was remanded for another murder, for several hours regarding Lumbini Sandaruwan's mysterious disappearance. Faced with these intense interrogations, the suspect, unable to conceal the truth any longer, finally began to confess all the crimes to the police officers.
According to the suspect's confession, this tragedy occurred on a certain day in May of last year. On that day, the suspect and the deceased Lumbini Sandaruwan spent time together at Sandaruwan's house, drinking beer. A sudden argument erupted between the two, who were intoxicated, over some matter. As this argument escalated, the suspect, greatly angered, took a towel from the house, wrapped it around Sandaruwan's neck, tightened it, and strangled him. Despite Sandaruwan's attempts to save his life, he was unable to escape the suspect's cruel grip, and he eventually succumbed at that very spot.
After committing the murder, the highly agitated suspect made plans to conceal this crime from the law. Accordingly, he took steps to dig a deep pit in a place in the garden behind the deceased Sandaruwan's house, where no one would suspect. Then, he single-handedly carried the dead body, placed it in the pit, covered it with soil, and arranged the ground to leave no trace. Subsequently, the suspect, taking the deceased person's motorcycle, left the house and arranged to hide it at another friend's house. He managed to keep this secret hidden without any suspicion for eleven months, but due to the persistent efforts of the police, he was eventually caught by the law.
Following this revelation by the suspect, the Weerambugedara Police immediately acted and submitted a complete report on the matter to the Kurunegala Magistrate's Court. According to a new court order obtained there, the suspect, who was detained at Kegalle Prison, was brought to Sandaruwan's house in the Gonawa area, where the crime occurred, the day before yesterday, under strict prison and police guard. Amidst intense public attention from residents, excavation work began in the said garden under the guidance and on-site identification provided by the suspect. After several hours of excavation conducted under the supervision of the Magistrate and expert medical officers, officials were able to recover parts of Lumbini Sandaruwan's body, which had been buried eleven months ago. The police have taken steps to transport the recovered body to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for post-mortem examination and further forensic medical tests. The police expect to further strengthen legal action against the suspect regarding this murder after receiving the relevant investigation reports.
