Norway police have launched a comprehensive investigation into an explosion that occurred outside the United States Embassy in Oslo early last Sunday. No casualties were reported from the incident, and a press release issued by the Oslo police stated that they received information about a loud explosion around 1:00 AM.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Oslo police representative Frode Larsen stated that the explosion was caused by some incendiary device. Investigators believe the embassy was targeted in this attack, and operations are currently underway to find the perpetrators involved and their motive.
Local media and individuals present stated that minor damage occurred to an entrance of the embassy after the explosion, and the surrounding road was covered in thick smoke. Therefore, the police expect to gather further information from witnesses regarding the incident.
Following this incident, the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) has called in additional officers, but there has been no change in the country's terror threat level, according to its communications advisor Martin Bernsen. Norway's Minister of Justice and Public Security, Astri Aas-Hansen, called this a serious and completely unacceptable incident that requires close attention, and confirmed that there is no danger to the public and that the police are conducting investigations using significant resources.
When questioned about this, the United States Embassy in Oslo informed the media to direct inquiries to the U.S. Department of State. However, no additional official response has yet been provided by either the Department of State or the Oslo police regarding the matter.
