The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has issued an 'Amber' advisory notice regarding the hot weather conditions, valid for today (30). According to this notice, issued on March 29, 2026, at 3:30 PM, the heat felt by the human body, or the heat index, is expected to remain at a 'caution' level in several provinces across the island.

This hazardous situation will severely affect the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, Eastern, North Western, Northern, and North Central provinces, as well as certain areas of the Monaragala district. Meanwhile, during the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 AM today, the highest temperature recorded on the island was 37.2 degrees Celsius in Kurunegala, with high temperatures of 36.9 degrees in Ratnapura, 36.0 degrees in Anuradhapura, and 35.9 degrees in Vavuniya. In contrast, the lowest temperature recorded was 8.4 degrees Celsius in Nuwara Eliya.

The Department of Meteorology warns that due to this 'caution' level heat index, which ranges between 39 and 45 degrees Celsius, prolonged exposure to sunlight and engaging in activities can lead to severe fatigue in the body. Furthermore, continued activity poses a risk of conditions such as dehydration and heat cramps due to electrolyte loss. Authorities point out that this heat index is not merely the maximum atmospheric temperature; rather, it is the actual temperature felt by the human body, calculated using factors such as atmospheric humidity and maximum temperature.

To protect against the prevailing hot weather conditions, a special set of guidelines has been introduced to the public based on the advice of the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services. Accordingly, the public is urged to drink sufficient water regularly, limit strenuous outdoor activities, and rest in shaded areas as much as possible. Additionally, health authorities have advised the public never to leave young children alone in vehicles, to use white or light-colored loose clothing, and to pay close attention to the elderly and sick. Further details on this can be obtained from the Disaster Preparedness and Response Unit of the Ministry of Health via telephone number 011-7446491.
