Homagama Headquarters Police have launched a comprehensive investigation to arrest a person who attempted to steal gold jewelry by digging up the grave containing the body of a three-month-old infant, buried about two weeks ago in a cemetery in the Homagama area.
On the evening of the 11th, the suspect arrived at the cemetery and obtained permission to enter from the crematorium operator, stating that he needed to clean his father's tombstone. However, as the crematorium operator did not notice the person leaving, he decided to investigate. It was then observed that someone had dug up a certain grave in the cemetery and attempted to exhume a body.
Upon witnessing this incident, the crematorium operator immediately informed the officials of the Homagama Pradeshiya Sabha and subsequently lodged a complaint with the police. Accordingly, a team of police officers promptly arrived at the scene, and preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had dug a hole about two feet deep and damaged one side of the infant's coffin. The police strongly suspect that he may have stolen some jewelry, such as a gold pendant, that the child was wearing.
The police have not yet received specific information regarding the parents or guardians of the infant involved in this incident, and a separate investigation has been launched to locate them. Efforts are currently underway to examine security camera footage from around the cemetery to identify and apprehend the still-at-large suspect. Additionally, the Homagama Magistrate was scheduled to visit the site on the 12th to conduct a magisterial inquiry.
