The police have succeeded in uncovering information regarding the murder of a sixty-two-year-old couple, who were reported missing in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, after six years. The remains of the couple, Sunil Kumarasinghe and Carmand de Silva, who resided in the Kambikotuwa Watta area of Wellampitiya, which falls under the Grandpass Police Division, were discovered buried in a canal in the same area.

Although the relatives of the couple initially lodged a complaint with the Grandpass Police regarding their disappearance, no proper information was uncovered. Following a notification made by the family relatives to the Presidential Secretariat, further investigations into this incident were assigned to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD). Accordingly, a team led by Chief Police Inspector S.B. Wijetunga, under the supervision of the Director of the Colombo Crimes Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Indika Lokuhetti, has commenced these investigations.

During these investigations, information about this brutal crime was revealed following extensive questioning of another couple residing near the missing couple's home. The suspects confessed during police interrogations that the couple was murdered with sharp weapons after a personal dispute escalated, and subsequently, the gold chain worn by the murdered woman was robbed, and their bodies were dismembered and buried in a nearby canal. It was further revealed during investigations that over time, when the buried body parts surfaced in the water on various occasions, the main suspect repeatedly re-buried and concealed them in the same location.

The neighboring couple involved in this crime and another individual who aided and abetted it have already been taken into police custody, and the police have confirmed that both male suspects are severely addicted to drugs. After taking the arrested suspects to the crime scene for an on-site inspection, the facts were reported to the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court, and the relevant body parts were exhumed. The police are currently conducting further investigations to apprehend another suspect connected to this murder.
