Yesterday (24) afternoon, a special telephone discussion was held between Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, primarily focusing on the escalating war situation in the Middle East region and its severe impact on global supply chains. Special attention was paid by both heads of state to the risks and adverse effects on the world's energy supply due to this unstable situation.
In light of this emerging crisis, the necessity to further expand the existing energy cooperation between Sri Lanka and India was strongly emphasized, with the aim of ensuring energy security in both countries. Furthermore, the two leaders agreed to work together to maintain stability and security in the Indian Ocean region. During this telephone conversation, views were also exchanged on the importance of the shipping sector, including ensuring the security of sea lanes and keeping them open, which are essential factors for uninterrupted international trade.
Regarding this telephone conversation with the Sri Lankan President, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated in a post on his official Facebook account that they extensively discussed the growing crisis in the West Asian region and its impediments to global energy security. The Prime Minister also mentioned that they reviewed the current progress of key initiatives implemented to enhance regional security and foster Indo-Sri Lanka energy cooperation. Furthermore, the Indian Prime Minister further indicated in his social media post that this discussion reaffirmed their commitment to working jointly as trusted close partners in facing common challenges.
