The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT) has issued a warning to the public to be vigilant about fake web links (URLs) circulating on the internet, claiming to provide access to the National Fuel Pass (QR code). The organization points out that these fraudulent links are currently spreading rapidly through various social media platforms and online messaging services.

The government introduced this QR code system with the aim of managing fuel consumption, due to the uncertainty in the global economy and disruptions to fuel supplies arising from the situation in the Middle East. However, cybercriminals are exploiting this situation to create fake web addresses with the deliberate intention of misleading the public and stealing their personal or financial information.

Therefore, Sri Lanka CERT strongly urges the public to completely refrain from clicking on or scanning unknown and suspicious links shared through unofficial websites, various messaging applications, or social media networks. They emphasize that using such fraudulent QR codes or links poses a severe risk of redirecting users to other fake websites and stealing highly sensitive personal information, including their bank account details.

Authorities further remind that the only official website to be used for matters related to the fuel QR code is https://fuelpass.gov.lk. The public has been advised to always use the internet cautiously and securely to avoid falling victim to such cyber scams, and to immediately report any suspicious cyber activity to Sri Lanka CERT through official communication channels.
