Former Director of State Intelligence Service, retired Major General Suresh Salley, who is currently held under a ninety-day detention order by the Criminal Investigation Department, has been suddenly hospitalized. Former Member of Parliament Udaya Gammanpila recently stated that Mr. Salley is being severely tortured and that attempts are being made to make him ill and cause his death by detaining him in an unsafe place infested with rats.
However, investigations into the incident reveal that he was hospitalized due to an ear infection. This hospitalization was carried out on medical advice due to severe pain caused by the exacerbation of a growth that developed due to a long-term habit of not cleaning the ears. Notably, when the Magistrate visited to inspect Mr. Suresh Salley, who is in detention, yesterday, he did not make any complaint to the Magistrate regarding torture or threats to his life. Normally, a suspect has the full right to inform the Magistrate if their rights are violated, and after treatment, he is scheduled to be brought back for questioning as usual.
The Criminal Investigation Department is currently conducting a broad investigation into the Easter Sunday bomb attacks. Information has been revealed that a highly secretive technical method was used, making it impossible even for telephone companies to obtain information regarding some of the phone SIM cards used by these attackers and those who supported them. In the past, Mr. Shani Abeysekera, who led the investigations into the Thajudeen murder case, also faced similar obstacles in obtaining phone data, and it was only through the direct intervention of the then President that this information could be obtained.
It is common in intelligence operations to use such difficult-to-identify secretive methods. However, Major General Suresh Salley has been named as the third suspect in the ongoing investigations into the Easter attacks based on several serious allegations. Key among these are dealing with the relevant suspects, influencing investigations, and specifically obtaining Sara Jasmine's DNA test report on three occasions.
