A lead emerges while investigating Madush's murder

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a special investigation into the death of Makandure Madush, a powerful underworld gang leader who was shot and killed in 2020 while in the custody of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

This controversial murder incident was reported on October 20, 2020, in the Maligawatta area. While officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) had taken Madush to the relevant area with the aim of recovering a stock of drugs allegedly hidden based on information he provided, two unknown gunmen swiftly acted, carried out this shooting, and killed him.

The investigation of this case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The IGP has taken this step considering a complaint and a special request submitted to the Secretary of the Ministry of Public Security by a brother of the deceased Makandure Madush.

Concurrently with this new investigation, statements are expected to be recorded soon from the officers of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) who were part of the police team that allegedly took Madush to the Maligawatta area on the day of the incident. Additionally, after reporting the facts to the Colombo Magistrate's Court, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has made arrangements to obtain a statement from the relevant medical officer and to acquire video footage related to the incident held by various media organizations for investigation purposes.
