A recent drone attack on Dubai was thwarted by the UAE's air defense system, but its debris struck the 90-story '23 Marina' building in the Dubai Marina area, creating a large hole and scorch marks.

By Thursday morning, severe damage was visible to the glass exterior facade of the building, and the Dubai Government Media Office initially stated that the situation arose from a drone crashing onto a building. There was no clear information reported initially about where this drone originated.

According to video footage confirmed by the BBC, it was clearly visible that a fire had broken out on several upper floors of the building. However, authorities later confirmed that the fire was completely under control and that no one inside the residential building was injured. Although authorities initially described this as a minor incident affecting the exterior of the building, investigations into the matter are still ongoing.

While no one in the building was harmed, an Asian taxi driver was killed when drone debris struck his taxi in the Al Barsha area. This incident has raised the number of foreigners killed in recent drone-related incidents in the United Arab Emirates to four.

This attack is one result of a wider wave of attacks launched across the Gulf region using Iranian-made drones, and authorities had responded to a similar incident near Dubai Creek Harbor on Wednesday night. This overall situation also caused temporary disruptions to operations at Dubai International Airport and several other locations.

Due to photographs and video footage circulating on social media showing black smoke plumes and fires, serious attention has now been drawn to the security of such crowded, towering buildings in major cities across the Gulf region and the threats they may face.
