In a Super Eight match of the T20 World Cup Cricket tournament held at Pallekele Stadium, England managed to defeat the Sri Lankan team by 51 runs. In this match, which had a slow pitch suitable for spinners, although Sri Lankan spinners managed to restrict the England team, who batted first, to 146 runs, it was noteworthy that Sri Lankan batsmen also faced the same fate on their home soil against the English spin attack led by Will Jacks.

Despite approximately 12 hours of continuous rain, the match started without any interruptions, and the Sri Lankan captain, who won the toss, decided to bowl first. Dilshan Madushanka and Dunith Wellalage perfectly demonstrated the success of that decision by putting the English top-order batsmen under severe pressure. Captain Jos Buttler was dismissed leg before wicket by a Wellalage delivery while attempting a reverse sweep, and in the final over of the powerplay, Jacob Bethel also fell victim to a Maheesh Theekshana delivery. Tom Banton was run out, and with Harry Brook also being dismissed by Wellalage, England found themselves in a difficult position at 68 runs for 4 wickets at the end of the first 10 overs.

At this critical juncture, opening batsman Phil Salt emerged as the saviour of the English innings. He successfully scored runs against bowlers like Wellalage, Madushanka, and Dushan Hemantha, completing his half-century. Sam Curran also attempted to accelerate the scoring rate by hitting a six off Hemantha, but he was dismissed by a slower delivery from Dushmantha Chameera. Although Salt counter-attacked in the same over from Chameera, hitting a four and a six, Sri Lanka regained control of the match when Salt was dismissed in Wellalage's final over. In the latter part of the innings, Will Jacks tried to score runs, but with Madushanka managing to dismiss both Jacks and Jofra Archer in the 19th over, England's innings concluded at 146 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs (Phil Salt 62, Will Jacks 21; Dunith Wellalage 3/26, Maheesh Theekshana 2/21).

The Sri Lankan team, who came out to chase the winning target, received no respite from the English bowlers. Jacks and Archer together silenced the entire Pallekele crowd by taking 5 top-order Sri Lankan wickets within the powerplay. Pathum Nissanka, who hit a few boundaries, fell into England's trap and was dismissed, and Jacks managed to dismiss Kusal Mendis and Pawan Rathnayake on consecutive deliveries. Kamil Mishara also fell victim to an Archer delivery, and Wellalage, who tried to relieve the pressure by hitting two fours, was also dismissed by Jacks, leaving Sri Lanka's scoreboard at a dismal 34 runs for 5 wickets by the end of the powerplay.

Although Dasun Shanaka and Kamindu Mendis attempted to create some hope by hitting a six each, that effort was thwarted when Kamindu was dismissed by Liam Dawson. Dushan Hemantha was out hit-wicket, and Shanaka, who fought a lone battle scoring 30 runs, was also dismissed due to excellent fielding by Jacks and Banton. Finally, with Adil Rashid and Dawson quickly taking the remaining Sri Lankan lower-order wickets, Sri Lanka's innings was restricted to 95 runs in the 17th over of the match (16.4 overs) (Will Jacks 3/22, Adil Rashid 2/13). Due to the margin of this massive defeat, the Sri Lankan team will face immense pressure regarding their progression in the Super Eight stage, and the abandonment of the match between Pakistan and New Zealand due to rain on the previous day, which awarded both teams a point each, has also significantly impacted this situation.
