A person suspected to be the second gunman involved in the shooting and killing of a lawyer and his wife in the Akuregoda area has been arrested by the police in the Hulandawa area, Monaragala. This suspect was apprehended as a result of a special operation conducted by the Monaragala Police.
The person thus arrested is currently being held in police custody and subjected to further questioning. It is also reported that an extensive investigation is being carried out using modern facial recognition technology systems to definitively confirm whether he is indeed the second gunman in this double murder.
On the 13th of last month, the lawyer and his wife were shot dead by two unknown gunmen while they were in a car parked in the car park of a supermarket in Akuregoda. Previously, a main suspect was arrested in the Ambalangoda area in connection with this crime, and information revealed that he was a runaway soldier who had carried out the shooting with a T56 assault rifle. After being produced in court, that suspect is currently held under a 90-day detention order.
The police have already uncovered a significant amount of additional information related to this murder. It is reported that the person accused of bringing a gunman to a lodge in the Pannipitiya area before the crime has now fled to Thailand. Police state that assistance from Interpol has been sought to apprehend him. Additionally, three more individuals were arrested in the Kahathuduwa area on the 16th and 17th on charges of aiding and abetting the crime. The police further state that approximately 80% of the investigations related to this Akuregoda double murder have already been completed.
