Isn't it true that we all live in a very "busy" world today? There are countless times when our heads ache with work duties, studies, and personal problems.
At times like these, what keeps us from falling is the strength of our mind, or "mental strength".However, this mental strength is not something we are born with. It's something we can develop and train ourselves, just like building a body at the gym. Today, we're going to talk about 5 ways to train your mind to stay "cool" and unshaken in the face of any problem.
1. Take Responsibility for Your Life (Take Responsibility)
The first thing you need to do to strengthen your mind is to take the "remote control" of your life into your own hands. Many people are used to blaming someone else, time, or luck when something goes wrong. But mentally strong people think, "This is something I did, and I will fix it."
In psychology, this is called "Internal Locus of Control." Simply put, it's believing that you have the power to change things in your life. When a problem arises, instead of asking "Why did this happen to me?", start thinking "What can I do to solve this?" That's where your victory begins.
2. Learn to Stay "Cool" When Things Get Hectic (Stay Calm)
You can recognize a true champion not when everything is going well, but by how they handle a big problem. When we face an emergency, our brain sends a "fight or flight" message to the body. Then the heart races, hands and feet tremble, and it becomes difficult to think clearly.
There's a great trick you can use at times like these. It's the "Box Breathing" method.
Inhale for 4 seconds.
Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
Exhale slowly for 4 seconds.
Wait for 4 seconds without inhaling again.
This sends a message to the brain saying, "Everything is fine now, there's nothing to worry about." Small exercises like this can make a big difference.
3. Don't Be Afraid of Changes (Embrace Change)
Mentally strong people view challenges not as problems, but as opportunities to learn. We all like to stay in our comfort zones without any trouble. But remember, there's no progress in places where we are too comfortable.
A new challenge means you're trying to "level up." Many studies have shown that even people who have faced major life problems become stronger over time because of those very problems, if they have mental strength. So, when a challenge comes, accept it and face it.
4. Don't Dwell on Old Things (Don't Dwell on the Past)
Dwelling on past mistakes only leads to losing out on the work that needs to be done today. To be a mentally strong person, you need to learn only the lesson from the past and practice letting go of those memories.
When driving a vehicle, we mostly look through the windshield, not the rearview mirror, right? Life is similar. No one can change old things. So, there's no point in thinking about them. Only think about "What can I do now?"
5. Only Think About Things You Can Control (Focus on What You Can Control)
This is the most important secret. There are two types of things in the world:
Things we can control: Our words, our efforts, how we treat others.
Things we cannot control: What others think, the weather, accidents.
Many people get stressed worrying about things they cannot change. Instead of dwelling on things like "Oh, that person scolded me," or "Why did it rain today?", think about what you *can* do. We can't stop the rain, but we can take an umbrella. Similarly, focus only on what you can do.
Let's make a simple start:
These things are hard to get used to overnight. Let's take a small step starting today. Choose the easiest one out of the 5 points above and start practicing it from tomorrow. After some time, you'll realize that your mind is much stronger than before!
