Ginigathhena Police state that three individuals, including two young men and another suspected of aiding and abetting, were arrested on the 18th of last month on charges of sexually abusing a schoolgirl studying in Grade 11 at a main school in the Ginigathhena area on several occasions. These three young men were arrested under the instructions of Ginigathhena Police OIC, Chief Police Inspector Viraj Vithanage.
Police investigations have revealed that the schoolgirl had been in a romantic relationship with a young man from the Gonawala area in Ginigathhena. On one occasion when she went to meet her boyfriend, he took her to a friend's house. The schoolgirl confessed to the Ginigathhena Police that her boyfriend and his friend had jointly sexually abused her there. According to her statement, the police also mentioned that these abuses occurred on several occasions.
The schoolgirl is under the care of her grandmother, and her grandmother became suspicious when she left home on the morning of January 17th and returned late at night. She lodged a complaint with the Ginigathhena Police regarding this. Following this, during questioning by the police, it was revealed that she had been sexually abused on several occasions. The OIC further stated that the schoolgirl has been referred to the Judicial Medical Officer at Nawalapitiya District General Hospital for further medical examination.
Police state that all three arrested suspects are between 16 and 17 years of age. Ginigathhena Police also mentioned that they are scheduled to be produced before the Hatton Magistrate's Court today (19th).
