Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna stated that there is no need to discuss with the government regarding the alleged inappropriate content in the Grade 6 English language module introduced under the new education reforms.
Addressing journalists after attending a Buddhist religious discourse organized by the Government Medical Officers' Association, the MP further alleged that both the Prime Minister and the Minister in charge of the subject were aware of who was responsible for including the controversial content in the module. He also pointed out that both the Prime Minister and the Minister have admitted that incorrect information has been included in the Grade 6 English textbook.
Explaining the stance of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, the MP stated: “As the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, we strongly oppose any attempt to harm our country's culture. We have consistently emphasized that educational reforms irrelevant to our country are unnecessary. What Sri Lanka needs are not reforms copied from foreign countries, but educational reforms that are well-suited to our own social and cultural context.”
Amidst the criticism regarding the new education reforms, Parliamentarian Rajapaksa again accused the current government of attempting to shift the responsibility onto previous governments and of failing to implement the reforms.
However, he promised that once the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna returns to power, they would introduce more suitable educational reforms aimed at national development.
