Addressing the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump has made several controversial remarks that have heated up global politics. In particular, he justified his plan to acquire Greenland, emphasizing that only America can ensure Greenland's security.
However, for the first time, adopting a relaxed policy on the matter, he stated that America would not use military force to acquire Greenland. The President strongly criticized European countries opposing Greenland's transfer to America, saying that he was only asking for an "iceberg" and that Europe was not ready to give it. Trump recalled that America saved Denmark from Germany in World War II and expressed surprise that despite such help, Denmark is unwilling to give up Greenland today, calling them "ungrateful" people. In this speech, Trump launched severe criticisms targeting countries like France, Canada, and Somalia. His use of highly derogatory words about the people of Somalia, referring to them as people with "low intelligence" and "pirates," drew widespread criticism. Commenting on Canada, he said that Canada receives many things for free from America and that the country exists because of America. Trump emphasized that the Canadian Prime Minister should remember his debt to America when making statements next time. Additionally, he stated that he had no confidence that NATO would help America if needed. He also pointed out that Europe should bear full responsibility for the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and America, being a country much further away from Ukraine, cannot bear that burden.
Commenting on domestic economic issues, Trump said he would not allow America to become a "country of tenants." Accordingly, he revealed that he had signed an executive order to prevent large corporations from buying single-family homes that should belong to ordinary people. He stated that an agreement had been reached with Venezuela regarding 50 million barrels of crude oil to strengthen the economy, which would bring significant economic benefits to both countries through American oil companies. Trump also revealed that he had threatened French President Emmanuel Macron with 100% tariffs on French wine and champagne if France did not control its drug prices.
Responding to the American President's remarks, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the US-dominated global system has now ended. He accused that the old world order would not return, and powerful nations are trying to achieve their goals by using tariffs as a weapon. The Canadian Prime Minister pointed out that it is a myth to think that the world will be governed by international rules, and countries must ensure their own security and energy independence. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who arrived late at the summit due to a technical fault in his plane, mentioned that he was scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Zelensky and was also in discussions with Russian President Putin to end the war.
