A protest organized by a group of lawyers, journalists, and civil activists against the Attorney General's conduct commenced today (21) at 10:00 AM near the Hulftsdorp Court Complex in Colombo.

Protesters accuse the Attorney General of covering up alleged corruption within the Attorney General's Department and protecting individuals facing fraud and corruption charges instead of enforcing the law against them. A similar protest had occurred previously after an internal letter was leaked.

This protest has been organized based on incidents such as the Attorney General's biased conduct in investigations related to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Mahara Prison incident, the murder of Mahesh Indika, and the decision to release suspects in the Lasantha Wickrematunge murder case.

Furthermore, the Attorney General's Department's unsuccessful attempt yesterday before the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court to withdraw charges in a case against Balangoda Kassapa Thero and others has also drawn strong criticism from the protesters.

Coinciding with this protest, the 'Free Lawyers' organization has also organized a protest today at 1:45 PM near the Attorney General's office, emphasizing that the dignity of the Attorney General and the department must be protected.

Meanwhile, expressing concern over the criticisms targeting the Attorney General on social media, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka issued a statement emphasizing that the Attorney General's role is quasi-judicial in nature.

The Bar Association points out that the Attorney General should make decisions based on the legal validity of the evidence presented by investigating officers, not on public opinion or emotions, and that if a decision is deemed unfair, there is the possibility of taking legal action through a writ order or a fundamental rights petition.

Stating that public officials should be allowed to act independently, the Bar Association urges the government and relevant institutions not to betray the independence of state institutions for political or narrow objectives.

However, Cabinet Media Spokesperson Minister Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed at a press conference yesterday that no discussions have yet taken place regarding the current government bringing an impeachment motion against Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe.
