Yesterday (18), customs officers at Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport arrested a Sri Lankan airline passenger. The reason for the arrest was an attempt to illegally bring 397 modern mobile phones, valued at over thirty-four million rupees, into the country.
At the time of the arrest, the suspect was carrying this consignment of phones through the "Green Channel" at the airport's arrival terminal.The arrested individual is a 45-year-old businessman residing in the Dematagoda area of Colombo. He had brought this consignment of mobile phones into the country without proper authorization from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) and without making any declaration to the customs officers at Katunayake Airport.
Information has revealed that this consignment of modern mobile phones was hidden inside three bags carried by the suspect. Customs officers at Katunayake Airport are currently detaining the individual and conducting further investigations.
