A person staged a protest this morning (24) by climbing a Divul tree in the premises of Sri Lumbini Viharaya in Aluthgama, Saliyawewa, claiming that the defendant had not paid the promised sum of fifty thousand rupees in connection with a complaint regarding an assault. S.M., a 50-year-old father of two residing in Rotawewa, Saliyawewa,

Jayawira Banda launched this protest, and at that time, the monthly meeting of the Karuwalagaswewa Samatha Moola Mandalaya (Conciliation Board) was also being held within the temple premises.

The protester stated that he took this step because the defendant, despite agreeing to pay the relevant amount according to an agreement reached when the assault incident was previously heard by the Conciliation Board, continuously broke that promise. He appealed to the Conciliation Board to either arrange for the immediate payment of the money due to him or to issue a letter to the police, enabling legal action against the defendant, as he had informed the relevant authorities several times about this matter but received no relief.

The protester emphasized that he was not prepared to descend from the tree until his demand was met. Subsequently, an official from the Samatha Moola Mandalaya (Conciliation Board), considering the developing situation, took steps to issue a letter to a Saliyawewa Police officer who was present. After receiving this letter, the protest ended, and he descended from the tree, and the Saliyawewa Police have commenced further investigations into the incident.
