A female corpse with cut wounds found near a stream in Beragala

On the morning of January 24, 2026, the police received information that a woman had been murdered in the Beragala reserve, which falls under the Mahawewa Police Division. Accordingly, police officers immediately responded, went to the area, and commenced preliminary investigations.

The deceased woman has been identified as a 46-year-old resident of the Warapitiya area. She had gone to the reserve on the evening of January 23 to tether cattle, and as she did not return home until night, relatives and local residents launched a search operation for her. It is reported that her body was found near a stream in the reserve during these searches.

It is stated that cut wounds were observed on her neck when the body was found, and the police suspect this to be a homicide. However, no definite information has yet been revealed regarding the motive for this murder or who committed it. Following the magisterial inquiry, the body has been placed in the mortuary of Ampara Hospital for post-mortem examination, and the Mahawewa Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
