Many underworld connections of Hiran Kosala, who was the manager of the Singer showroom located in the center of Ambalangoda town, have now been revealed after he was shot dead inside his business premises this morning.
The person killed in this manner is a 44-year-old named Hiran Kosala, a resident of Vidyala Mawatha, Ambalangoda. It was reported that he was a candidate for the mayoral post of the Ambalangoda Municipal Council, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya in the last local government election, and was also closely associated politically with Mr. Gayan Karunathilaka, a powerful politician in the area.
Preliminary police investigations have revealed that two individuals who arrived shot him while he was seated in a chair at his business premises.
Although the murdered person was not directly an underworld gang member, the police suspect that he maintained strong friendships with various underworld gang leaders and members operating in the area. He had connections with both 'Loku Pati', who is in prison, and his main rival, 'Karandeniya Sudda'. Furthermore, investigations have revealed that he also worked closely with powerful criminals who were rivals to each other, such as Kosgoda Sujee and Uragaha Indika.
In addition, he had a close friendship with Biranth Warusavithana, the brother-in-law of Karandeniya Sudda and STF Raju, who was murdered in November 2025. In the context of escalating conflicts between rival gangs recently, it is suspected that this murder could be an extension of the series of 'blood for blood' clashes, parallel to the attack targeting Uragaha Shantha's relatives on the 18th and the retaliatory shootings in Trincomalee. However, due to his connections with all rival groups and his control over the finances of those criminals, investigators have found it difficult to definitively identify which party carried out this attack.
Hiran Kosala had previously been imprisoned on several occasions for various charges. Specifically, he had been accused of secretly treating and aiding those injured in the shooting attack on a prison bus in the Ethanamadala area of Kalutara, which resulted in the murder of underworld leader Samayan.
He had been accused of facilitating treatment for a person injured in a shooting incident two years ago, and it is said that the doctor involved has now fled the country. He had also been previously arrested by the Police Narcotics Bureau in connection with two murders that occurred in 2014 and 2015, and for possessing a live hand grenade.
After the murder, the victim's mobile phone, which had gone missing, was found in the possession of one of his relatives by the Senior Superintendent of Police, Elpitiya. Upon examining the phone, it was revealed that he had been in contact with the criminal named 'Loku Pati', who is detained in Boossa Prison, via phone last night. Further investigations into this matter are being conducted under the supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Southern Province, Kithsiri Jayalath, led by Senior Superintendent of Police, Elpitiya Division, Lucky Randeniya, and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Galle Crimes Division, Namal Perera.
Meanwhile, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Kithsiri Jayalath emphasized that serious underworld criminals detained in high-security prisons like Boossa continue to freely use mobile phones to orchestrate such crimes. He further stated that despite informing the relevant authorities about this issue, they have so far failed to control the situation.
