Wennappuwa Headquarters Police confirm that the lifeless body of a 17-year-old girl, who jumped into the Gin Oya from the Nainamadama bridge bordering Wennappuwa and Kochchikade areas and went missing on the evening of the 28th, was found yesterday (29) morning. Her body was found floating on the water near the bridge after an intensive search operation carried out by residents and security forces for a day.
This sudden death has created a deeply sorrowful atmosphere in the area, and police investigation teams have launched a comprehensive inquiry into the incident.The unfortunate victim has been identified as Umayangana Sathsarani, a 17-year-old girl who was a permanent resident of Bopitiya, Ja-Ela. At the time of her death, she was temporarily residing in Poruthota, Kochchikade, and preliminary police investigations have revealed that she was a school student. Information has been reported that there was a romantic relationship between the young woman who faced this tragedy and the young man who tried to save her.
On the evening of the 28th, around 5:30 PM, the young woman arrived near the Nainamadama Gin Oya bridge. She called her alleged boyfriend on her mobile phone and asked him to come to that location immediately. Acting on the call, the young man arrived at the spot on a motorcycle with another friend. The police state that the two met near the bridge and talked for about ten minutes, during which time the young woman received a phone call from her mother. Her boyfriend told the police that the mother, who made the call, severely scolded the young woman for coming out without informing the family, and after that call, the young woman became extremely agitated and frightened.
After being severely distressed by her mother's scolding, the young woman cried, saying she couldn't go home and that her mother was scolding her. She then walked towards the bus stop and returned to the bridge, where, at an unexpected moment, she suddenly jumped into the Gin Oya. As soon as she jumped into the water, her 18-year-old boyfriend, who was there, immediately jumped into the river with the intention of saving her. The young man who survived told the police that he made a strenuous effort to jump into the water and grab her, but when he tried to grab her hand, she pushed his hand away.
Two employees working at a nearby tourist hotel witnessed the young couple jumping into the river. They immediately acted and threw a rope into the river to save them. Although the drowning young man managed to cling to the rope and save himself, the young woman, caught by the current, drowned and disappeared. Immediately after the incident, residents and the police launched intensive search operations to find the young woman until that night (28), but due to the darkness, the body could not be found.
Subsequently, a special search operation using boats was resumed the next day, yesterday (29) morning, during which the young woman's body was found floating on the water. The 18-year-old young man who survived, named Rumesh Lakshan, a resident of Nainamadama, Wennappuwa, was immediately admitted to Marawila Base Hospital via the 1990 Suwasariya ambulance service. He is currently receiving inpatient treatment at the hospital, and hospital sources confirm that his health condition is not serious.
The police are investigating whether the cause of this unfortunate incident was an internal family problem or distress stemming from a romantic relationship. Among the facts revealed in preliminary investigations are that the deceased young woman's mother is currently in a second marriage and that there have been some internal disputes within the family. However, the immediate cause for the young woman jumping into the Gin Oya is suspected to be the phone call received from home and the fear it caused.
The post-mortem examination of the recovered body was scheduled to be held at Marawila Base Hospital, and a team of police officers, including Sub-Inspector Dissanayake, under the direct instructions of Wennappuwa Headquarters Chief Police Inspector Thilina Hettiarachchi, is conducting further investigations into the incident.
