
Former Deputy Minister S.C. Muthukumarana and former Member of Parliament Janak Mahendra Adhikari, who were two prominent activists in Anuradhapura District politics, have passed away due to illness. The departure of two senior politicians who represented the Anuradhapura District at the same time has caused great shock among the residents.
Family members confirm that Mr. S.C. Muthukumarana, who had been ill for some time, passed away last night while receiving treatment at Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. He was 73 years old at the time of his death due to a heart attack. Mr. Muthukumarana's body has now been brought to his residence on Katiyawa Road, Eppawala, and a large number of residents are visiting the house to pay their last respects.
Family members inform that the final rites for the body are scheduled to take place next Saturday, the 20th, at the Eppawala crematorium.
Mr. Muthukumarana, who began his political journey as a member of the Thalawe Pradeshiya Sabha, was also an experienced politician who served as the former Leader of the North Central Provincial Council. He entered Parliament in 2010 representing the Podujana Eksath Peramuna through the Kalawewa constituency, and served as a Member of Parliament during the seventh, eighth, and ninth parliamentary terms.
His contribution as the Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms from 2013 to 2015 was particularly noteworthy. Later, joining the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, he served as the Horowpothana electoral organizer, but due to his illness, he spent recent times resting at home.
Meanwhile, another prominent political figure in the Anuradhapura District, former Member of Parliament Janak Mahendra Adhikari, also passed away at the age of 60. He succumbed to a prolonged illness. Mr. Janak Mahendra Adhikari, who served as the Kekirawa electoral organizer for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, also rendered extensive service to the people of Anuradhapura as a Member of Parliament.
