Dr. Ajith Gunawardena, Media Spokesperson for the Central Environmental Authority, stated that the air quality in the country has deteriorated these days. He pointed out that the Air Quality Index (AQI) has reached high levels, especially in the Northern, North Central, North Western, and Western provinces.
Dr. Gunawardena also stated that the air quality has significantly deteriorated yesterday and today, with the current Air Quality Index (AQI) value ranging between 150 and 200.
He further commented that cross-border air circulation and the activation of the Northeast Monsoon have contributed to this situation.
Dr. Ajith Gunawardena emphasized that the Central Environmental Authority has observed such a situation during this period for the past few years and is continuously monitoring the country's Air Quality Index as well as the overall atmospheric quality.
Considering the potential health issues that sensitive individuals may face due to this poor air quality, he advises seeking immediate medical advice or necessary treatment.
However, Dr. Ajith Gunawardena stated to the media that this situation is expected to subside after today.
