The Polonnaruwa District Disaster Management Unit has decided to temporarily close the road leading to the Somawathi sacred site, considering the potential flood risk due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions. The Assistant Director of the unit stated that this measure will be in effect until further notice, as the road is likely to be submerged with heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Mahaweli Authority announced that the Victoria, Randenigala, and Rantambe reservoirs have begun to spill due to continuous rainfall. The Authority also indicated that the amount of water released from the Rantambe reservoir into the Mahaweli River via the Minipe Anicut could further increase in the future, depending on the prevailing rain conditions.

The spillover water from Loggal Oya, Diyabana Oya, Haepola Oya, and Ulhitiya reservoirs, as well as the water capacity of Badulu Oya, are directly joining the Mahaweli River.

Due to this situation, the Mahaweli Authority warns that residents in the lower valley areas of the Mahaweli River should act with extreme caution and vigilance.

The Kalawewa and Kandalama reservoirs, belonging to the Kalawewa basin, are currently spilling, and the Maduru Oya reservoir has also reached its maximum water level. Furthermore, authorities state that the water levels of Bowatenna, Ibbankatuwa, Moragahakanda, and Kalu Ganga reservoirs are currently at their maximum limits, and these reservoirs could also spill in the future depending on the rainfall received in their catchment areas.
