On December 8, 2025, a powerful magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan, near Aomori Prefecture. Reports indicate that the earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the Aomori coast and at a depth of 50 kilometers.
Following the tremor, authorities immediately issued tsunami warnings for coastal areas including Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate. Although waves up to three meters high were predicted, several ports observed tsunami wave levels between 40 and 50 centimeters.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a seismic intensity of Upper-6 was recorded in Hachinohe city, Aomori Prefecture. At least 23 people, including guests at a hotel, have been reported injured, with one in serious condition. However, no fatalities have been confirmed so far, and no widespread destruction has been reported beyond falling objects and minor structural damage to buildings.
Power outages have affected approximately 900 homes in the Hokkaido and Tohoku regions. The government has established a special disaster management office, prioritizing rescue and relief efforts for those affected. Authorities have confirmed that no radiation leaks or damage have been reported from nuclear power plants or factories in the affected areas, and these facilities are operating safely as usual.
