Starlink, the US-based company owned by the world's number one billionaire Elon Musk, has donated 100 Starlink internet connection units to support disaster management efforts in Sri Lanka.
The Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development states that this donation will be a significant boost to strengthen disaster operations in the country.Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, pointed out that the use of these devices will enable the expansion of communication and connectivity facilities during emergency disaster situations. He expressed confidence that this will provide an opportunity to carry out disaster relief services and emergency response processes more efficiently and effectively.
Speaking to the media today (13), the Secretary stated that the relevant hardware units have already arrived in the island. He further added that necessary steps are being taken to promptly hand over these devices to the Disaster Management Centre to further enhance the efficiency of disaster response operations.
Previously, when a disaster situation occurred in Sri Lanka, Starlink had waived one month's bill for its current Sri Lankan customers, which was also done as a form of assistance during the disaster.
