Prices of vegetables and other essential goods have been announced for December 19 and 20, 2025, at several major economic centers across the island. According to data released from economic centers in Kebithigollewa, Nuwara Eliya, Dambulla, Welisara, and Thambuththegama, some fluctuations in vegetable prices are observed in the market.
At the Keppetipola Economic Center on December 19, the wholesale price of a kilo of beans ranged between Rs. 400 and Rs. 500, while carrots were priced between Rs. 200 and Rs. 250.
A kilo of cabbage sold for Rs. 200 to Rs. 250, tomatoes for Rs. 450 to Rs. 500, and green chilies remained high, priced between Rs. 1000 and Rs. 1200 per kilo. Nuwara Eliya potatoes sold for Rs. 200 to Rs. 220 per kilo, and imported large onions were reportedly sold for around Rs. 200 per kilo.
On the same day, vegetable prices at the Dambulla Economic Center showed similar values, with a kilo of cabbage selling for Rs. 220 to Rs. 300, and a kilo of beans for Rs. 400 to Rs. 500. Carrots from Jaffna sold for Rs. 170 to Rs. 200 per kilo, with Nuwara Eliya carrots also falling within the same price range. Green chili prices in Dambulla also exceeded Rs. 1000, and a kilo of limes sold for Rs. 200 to Rs. 250.
At the Nuwara Eliya Special Economic Center on December 19, a difference was observed between the farmer's buying price and the wholesale price. The buying price for cabbage was Rs. 250, while the wholesale price was Rs. 280. Carrots were recorded at a buying price of Rs. 200 and a wholesale price of Rs. 230, while leeks were priced at a buying price of Rs. 220 and a wholesale price of Rs. 250.
Considering potato prices, it is noteworthy that the wholesale price of red potatoes had risen to Rs. 300.
According to data from the Welisara Economic Center, which includes retail prices directly affecting consumers, a kilo of Samba rice was recorded at a retail price of Rs. 240, and a kilo of Nadu rice at Rs. 230. The wholesale price of a coconut was Rs. 165, and the retail price was Rs. 170. Chicken (with skin) sold for a retail price of Rs. 1390 per kilo, and an egg for a retail price of Rs. 42. Looking at vegetable prices in Welisara, the retail price of beans had risen to Rs. 600, and carrots to Rs. 320.
According to prices released from the Thambuththegama Economic Center on December 20, the wholesale price of beans was recorded in a high range between Rs. 500 and Rs. 650. A kilo of carrots sold for Rs. 250 to Rs. 270, and a kilo of pumpkin for Rs. 90 to Rs. 100. Green chili prices remained high, with Puttalam variety green chilies having a wholesale price between Rs. 900 and Rs. 1000 per kilo, and limes selling for Rs. 240 to Rs. 250 per kilo.
