Former UNP Legal Secretary Daya Pelpola Passes Away at 85

President's Counsel Daya Pelpola, a renowned lawyer, politician, and diplomat, has passed away at the age of 85.

Mr. Pelpola served as the Legal Secretary of the United National Party (UNP) for over 15 years and also played a pivotal role in strengthening the party as its acting General Secretary.

During the Yahapalana (Good Governance) era, he was appointed Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Italy from 2015 to 2019, where he implemented programs to enhance political, economic, cultural, and educational ties between the two countries.

He also held several prominent positions in the state sector, including Chairman of SriLankan Airlines, the National Lotteries Board, and the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.

Mr. Daya Pelpola's remains are placed at his residence, No. 78, Liyanage Mawatha, Pelawatta, Battaramulla. The final rites are scheduled to take place today (December 16) at 3:00 PM at the Pelawatta Leon Bastion Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at the Borella Cemetery at 4:30 PM.
