Employees allege that a severe injustice has occurred to a group of employees who are awaiting compensation to retire from service, due to the delay in the process of abolishing the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and implementing new companies.
Currently, 2,173 employees have submitted their resignation letters, but due to the continuous postponement of the process to abolish the Ceylon Electricity Board, they have been unable to pursue other jobs, go abroad, or receive their due compensation. This has created many serious problems for them, as pointed out by these employee groups.
However, the Ceylon Electricity Board states that the board will continue to operate until the subject minister officially abolishes the CEB by issuing a gazette notification during the restructuring process of the Ceylon Electricity Board. Therefore, they further state that it has not been possible to provide compensation to the employees who submitted their resignation letters.
These employees also allege that some employees are suffering from serious illnesses and have been unable to undergo essential surgeries, while others have been unable to fulfill all their hopes of finding other jobs, going abroad, or starting new businesses.
Although the abolition of the Ceylon Electricity Board was scheduled to take effect from January 01, 2024, CEB employees further express concern that due to ongoing delays in the restructuring process, the payment of compensation will be postponed for several more months.
The total number of employees at the Ceylon Electricity Board is 22,500, of whom 2,173 have already submitted their resignation letters. It is reported that the remaining employees have been assigned to four new companies.
