According to the latest report released by the International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 374,000 workers have been at risk of losing their jobs due to Cyclone 'Ditwa'. This group has been unable to resume work or find other suitable employment opportunities, resulting in a loss of income of US$ 48 million (approximately LKR 1480 million) per month.

The report emphasizes that. Among those who lost their jobs, 244,000 are men, and approximately 130,000 are women. Furthermore, the report states that among the affected workers, 85,000 were employed in the agricultural sector, 125,000 in the industrial sector, and 164,000 in the service sector.

The ILO report indicates that the loss of livelihoods and income for these workers severely impacts their families, forcing them to take various measures to overcome the situation. Specifically, it warns that there is a risk of these families resorting to child labor as a result. Due to the significant impact on the country's agriculture caused by landslides and floods from the cyclone, the report states that the greatest damage has occurred to jobs related to the agricultural and fisheries sectors.

The report also reveals that due to floods and landslides, the country's tea harvest could decrease by approximately 35 percent. Since about 70% of the total tea harvest is supplied by small tea estate owners, this situation has severely impacted thousands of workers employed in this sector. The International Labour Organization points out that these individuals have experienced a "fall from the frying pan into the fire," and many who lost their homes have also lost their livelihoods simultaneously.

Overall, it is estimated that approximately 16% of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is at risk due to the floods and landslides caused by the cyclone. The report further states that this economic value amounts to approximately US$ 16 billion (LKR 1600 million).
