Update: Unprecedented Rainfall Exceeds 300mm Mark

 The prevailing heavy rains and strong winds are expected to continue due to the impact of the unique weather system affecting the island. Notably, very high rainfall values have been reported from many areas across the island during the period from 8:30 AM on November 27, 2025, to 4:30 AM on November 28.

According to these reports, the highest rainfall of 315 mm was recorded in Cheddikulam area of Vavuniya District. Additionally, 305 mm of rainfall was reported from Alampil area in Mullaitivu District, 223.9 mm from Kandy city, and 218.5 mm from Madu area in Mannar. Meteorological data also indicates that very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm has occurred in Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, and Trincomalee areas.




Forecasts indicate that continuous rain or thundershowers are likely in many parts of the island in the coming period. Specifically, there is a high risk of very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm in some places in the Northern, North-Central, Central, North-Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Western provinces. Furthermore, the meteorological department informs that very heavy rainfall exceeding 150 mm is possible in some areas of Trincomalee, Badulla, Batticaloa, Galle, and Matara districts, and moderately heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm in some places in the rest of the island.

In addition to heavy rainfall, strong wind conditions are also expected across the island. The wind speed in many parts of the island could increase to 60 to 70 kmph, with the possibility of it escalating to gusty winds of 80 to 90 kmph at times. The Department of Meteorology kindly requests the public to take necessary precautions to minimize potential disasters and accidents caused by these heavy rains and strong winds.
