Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Kelani River basin, the Department of Irrigation has issued a Red Flood Warning (Number 03) effective from 6:00 AM today (28th). This warning will remain valid for the next 48 hours, until 6:00 AM on the 30th, according to the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division of the department.
Given the current heavy rainfall, the volume of water released from the upper reservoirs of the Kelani River has increased, and an analysis of river gauge levels indicates a high risk of major flooding in the low-lying areas of the Kelani River basin within the next 48 hours.
This flood situation is particularly predicted to affect the low-lying areas belonging to the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Eheliyagoda, Norwood, Yatiyantota, Galigamuwa, Ruwanwella, Bulathkohupitiya, Dehiowita, Seethawaka, Dompe, Padukka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kolonnawa, Kelaniya, Wattala, and Colombo.
Considering this emergency disaster situation, the Department of Irrigation urges residents in the affected areas and drivers traveling through these areas to exercise extreme caution to protect their lives and property. Furthermore, the announcement states that Disaster Management Units have been informed to take necessary steps for controlling the situation and providing relief. The announcement is below.
