Advisory notices have been issued for residents in low-lying areas near the Kelani River to evacuate due to the current flood situation.
The map presented here scientifically analyzes the flood situation that occurred in the Kelani River basin in May 2016 and its impact. Specifically, the map, highlighted in pink, illustrates how a large area on both sides of the river was submerged due to the rising water levels in the Kelani River basin.
The Hydrographic Survey Unit of the Sri Lanka Navy and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Branch of the Survey Department of Sri Lanka contributed to the preparation of this map. Initial field data collection activities were carried out from May 23 to June 02, 2016, and based on this data, the map was created at a scale of 1:90,000.
It is noted that the data shown on the map has been published subject to updates after field verification.
According to the map's legend, flooded areas are represented in pink, while water sources and rivers are shown in blue. Major roads, minor roads, railway lines, and the expressway system are also marked. This map helps identify the impact of the flood situation on the road network and marshland areas, clearly reflecting how the water flowing into the sea through the lower basin of the Kelani River encroached upon the surrounding land.
It is predicted that not only the areas relevant to this map but also further surrounding areas will be submerged.
