All passengers who were in the bus that was swept away by the strong current while traveling over the Kala Oya bridge on the Anuradhapura - Puttalam main road have now been safely rescued. Confirming information regarding this disaster, the Disaster Management Centre stated that the rescue operation was successful.
The bus, carrying 68 passengers, was pushed off the road and trapped in the water due to the sudden rise in water levels. It is reported that the passengers, finding themselves in a helpless situation after the accident, climbed onto the roof of a nearby house to ensure their safety.
Rescue operations were hampered last night due to dangerously rising water levels and strong currents.
However, with the arrival of disaster relief teams at the scene early this morning, rescue efforts commenced, and the stranded individuals were safely brought to land. Officials stated that among those rescued were a foreign woman and a serving judge.
In light of the prevailing adverse weather conditions, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has intervened and is personally overseeing this rescue operation to ensure the swift and safe evacuation of those affected.
